In the heart of Vega Baja del Segura, in the village of Rojales, there is one of the most unusual houses in Spain –Casa de las Conchas(Shell House). It is a real jewel of architecture, the façade and interiors of which are decorated with more than700,000 shells.
The originator and creator of this unique project wasManuel Fulleda Alcaraz, who in 1993 began many years of work decorating his home with shells collected on the beaches of Guardamar del Segura and La Manga del Mar Menor. The process continued close20 years– each shell has been placed by hand, and the whole is complemented by ceramic elements and carefully selected colors.
The shells cover not only the walls of the building, but also the balustrades, stairs, pots, pipes and chimney, creating a coherent mosaic that shimmers in a thousand shades in the sun. Manuel also used the shells to create sculptures and decorative details, which gives this place a unique character.
Casa de las Conchas refers to the famous house of the same name in Salamanca, but the design in Rojales is the work of one person and was created out of pure passion and love for the sea.
Today, the house serves asmini-museumand is available to visitorsdaily from 10:00 to 20:00. Entrance ticket costs5 euros.
Note:The best photos will be taken in the morning, when the sun beautifully illuminates the façade from the front.
