Museo de Belenes
A small, free museum in the center of Alicante with incredibly elaborate nativity scenes. You enter for a while... and you stay longer than you planned.
This is exactly the type of place that is easy to miss and then regret a little.
From the outside, it is inconspicuous, hidden in the old part of the city, a few steps from the town hall. Inside - a world of miniatures that can really draw you in.
The whole museum revolves around Christmas nativity scenes, but not the "off the shelf" ones. These are elaborate scenes with a huge amount of details: characters, buildings, animals, whole stories enclosed on a small scale.
The biggest impression is made by the huge model of Bethlehem, but it's worth slowing down at each showcase, because the best things are often hidden somewhere on the side.
And seriously, look everywhere.
To the windows, inside the houses, to the darker corners. Some scenes are softly lit, so sometimes the flashlight in your phone does the job and suddenly you see something that was completely missing before (e.g. temple motifs or hidden scenes of everyday life).
This is not a big museum - two rooms, 20-30 minutes max.
But if you like details, you can easily stay there a little longer.
Admission is free, so it is all the more worth stopping by while walking around the old town.
